What it involves

A crown is a cap that covers a damaged tooth to restore its shape, strength and appearance. A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by attaching a false tooth to crowns on the neighbouring teeth or to implants. Both are made in a laboratory from materials such as metal, ceramic or porcelain fused to metal.

Who it is for

Crowns suit teeth that are heavily filled, cracked or weakened, or that have had root canal treatment. Bridges are for people with a gap who have healthy teeth either side. A dentist will explain the choices, including whether other options such as implants or dentures might suit you.

How long it usually takes

The process normally takes at least two visits, with a laboratory making the crown or bridge between them. Some practices can produce restorations on the same day with digital equipment.

What to expect

At the first visit the dentist numbs the area, shapes the tooth or teeth, takes impressions or scans and fits a temporary restoration. At the second visit the temporary is removed and the final one is checked and cemented.

Aftercare

Cleaning matters around the margins of a crown and underneath a bridge, where food can collect. Your dentist or hygienist can show you how. Avoid very hard or sticky foods on a temporary restoration. Contact the practice if a temporary comes off, the bite feels uneven or the tooth becomes sore.

See a dentist if a tooth is cracked or heavily broken down, or if a crown or bridge feels loose or has come off. Keep it safe and take it with you.
